President's Message
President's Update : 2011 September 6

Time flies when you are having fun, so the saying goes.  And as my
term is drawing to a close, I could not help to ponder the events of the past
18 months.  Starting with the business and the "busy-ness" of organizing
and hosting a regional conference in 2010 up to the most recent August
20  Summer Educational Series # 1, being your President had afforded me
the best experiences and lessons and the best relationships that I will
forever treasure.

This year started with the Executive Board meetings in January and
March and soon it was off to attend the 12th North Central Regional
Conference in St. Louis, Missouri held from April 28 - May 1, 2011.
Representatives from PNA Chapters all over the Midwest or North Central
regions  namely; Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, St. Louis, Kansas City, Indiana
and Wisconsin gathered at the very elegant and accommodating Hotel
Lumiere located in the Lacledes Landing part of the city.  The rigorous and
fun-filled two days of education and networking were balanced by the
exhilarating fun during the welcome and the gala nights.  As usual, all took
advantage of the dance floor on both nights and danced the two nights
away.  Awardees were honored from each chapter including our very own ,
Mattie Upano who took home PNA-Indiana's Nursing Excellence Award.
Our regional representation was consisted of Executive Director Redd
Knotts, President Elect Bong Dayon, Immediate Past President Mattie
Upano, Vice President Nenita De La Cruz and Board Member Diana
Darang and yours truly.

PNA-Indiana continues to be well represented in various events and
sought after as partners in Wellness Screenings.  As of date we had stood
side by side with the Philippine Association of Medical Technologists and
on June 4th of this year, we were able to do BMIs, BP Screens and
Glucose Levels of attendees of the Annual Asian Festival held at the
Garfield Park.

PNA-Indiana continued to be an integral part of the Camp Mabuhay
Summer Day camp in Kokomo, Indiana where on June 11, adopted
children from the Philippines were feted to a day of Philippine culture, food,
and history.  PNA-Indiana once again were assigned to the Music and
Language booth and this year, we successfully and joyfully taught the
children and their parents the lyrics and the motions to the traditional
Filipino folk song, Paru-parung Bukid.  We sure had fun hearing and
watching the attendees have fun saying and singing "Uy!".

The 32nd Philippine Nurses Association of America [ PNAA] National
Convention was held at the Hyatt Regency Embarcadero in San Francisco.
From June 28 to July 3, 2011, Filipino nurses from all over the US
gathered in this highly classy and beautifully located hotel . The
PNA-Indiana delegation consisting of Redd Knotts, Bong Dayon, Florence
Pulcifer, Gertrude McCray and yours truly were feted with loads of learning
and camaraderie.  First time in the history of PNAA were a Beverage
Reception held for first time attendees and was a big hit.  The Welcome
and Networking Night and the Gala night were both successfully well
attended and enjoyed by all.  The Leadership Institute was very innovative
and interactive and have all participants on their feet.  The group
exercises on communication has everyone roaring and proved that
learning can both be informative and fun at the same time.  The Education
Day boasted a plethora of extremely remarkable speakers including Dr.
John Peabody MD, DTM&H, MPHIL, PhD, FACP who spoke on the Quality
Improvement Demonstration Study: The QIDS Research on Improving the
Health of Children In the Philippines and Patricia Benner PhD, RN, FAAN
who spoke on the Roles of Engagement and Skills of Involvement in
Becoming a Nurse.  The Keynote Speaker was Ms. Wilhelmina Manzano
MA.RN, NEA-BC who spoke about her Personal Reflections and Learnings
as an Engaged Nurse.  Both the Leadership and Education Days were
opened with our own PNAA President giving an update on the state of the
organization as it related to his term theme of "Engage and Make a
Difference".  The second half of the Education Day featured  Advanced
Practice Nurses who spoke eloquently on topics such as Creating Nursing
Opportunities and Administrative Policy changes [Karen Wolf, PhD, RN,
APRN-BC, DPNAP] and Delirium in the ICU: Management and Treatment
[Brenda Pun, MSN,RN,ACNP].  Our very own Rollie Perrea MSN, RN,
APN-BC  [PNA-NE] spoke on Healthcare Information Technology and Riza
Mauricio MSN, RN, ACNP [PNA-Metro Houston] who presented a very
informative Global guidelines on Asthma Management.

Having been on summer break, PNA-Indiana 's Executive Board
reconvened and held its meeting at the Crown Point Civic Center in Crown
Point Indiana on Aug.20th.Following the meeting was the Summer
Education series #1 with Dr. Ferdinand Ramos as the guest Speaker.  He
spoke about Spinal Cord stimulators, its indications and management.
The well attended event also included the topics, Bedside Stories: Finding
Humor in Nursing given by Bong Dayon and The Price is NOT Right: The
Cost of Negativity in the Workplace given by yours truly.  Attendees

technologists and physical therapists.  Some PNA-Indiana members who
traveled from Indianapolis to attend the meeting and the education offering
were Redd Knotts, Emma Tolentino, Daisy Blythe, Florence Pulcifer, Josie
Jimenez, Mattie Upano and Felgrace James.  The seminar was free to all

The next Executive Board Meeting is Oct. 16 and a strategic meeting is
tentatively scheduled for Nov. 5.

General Assembly.  As usual this event will be free to all members and
