NEWSFLASH

Indiana requires foreign educated nurses to pass the Commission on
Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) Qualifying (Predictor) Exam
for licensure in the state.

PNA-IN deemed this requirement unnecessary because foreign nurses will
take an exam—the NCLEX-RN—, pass a Credentials Review and pass an
English Language Proficiency Test to fulfill state requirements. The
association established a task force within the PNA-IN to remove this CGFNS
Exam Requirement and the Task Force petitioned the state.

On Nov. 20, 2008, the PNA-IN CGFNS Task Force’s petition was APPROVED
by the Indiana State Board of Nursing.

The PNA-IN CGFNS Task Force overcame a large milestone with the
approval of its petition, however this is only the FIRST STEP in the legislative
process to remove this requirement from state legislation.  The Task Force
will continue to push for this proposed change until it reaches the desk of
Gov. Mitch Daniels and it is signed into law.

PNA-IN creates a welcoming environment in INDIANA for foreign nurses that
benefits its members and the state. The removal of this requirement will
encourage foreign nurses to come to Indiana and will help ease the nursing
shortage in the state.
